If you fancy exploring a little bit beyond the immediate vicinity of the Orlando area, then there are plenty of options available to you. Both coasts are within around an hour’s drive and have masses to offer.
Gulf Coast Beaches
Beaches run in an almost continuous line along the Gulf Coast, so for a fix of sand and sea this is the place to go, and only an hour away at its closest point. Visit Clearwarer and take a dolphin spotting boat trip, visit the tranquil Indian Rocks beach, or Siesta Key, an amazing beach with bars and restaurants. Englewood Beach on Manasota Key is very laid back and family orientated.
Museums & Wildlife
Visit museums in St Petersburg, Sarasota and Tampa; see local, rescued wildlife at Homosassa Springs State Wildlife Park, including a floating observatory where you can observe wild manatees up close. Visit the "mermaids" at Weeki Wachee Springs or the Florida Aquarium at Tampa.
Gatorland gives close up encounters with alligators and other native species. Or take an air-boat ride across some of the local wetlands to see exotic birds, turtles and wild alligators.
The Kennedy Space Center
Situated on Merritt Island, only an hour's drive from Hightrees, this is the only place in the Western Hemisphere where humans are launched into space. Why not take a bus tour around the center where you can hop on, hop off, visiting different areas. See the launch pads and the Vehicle Assembly Building and marvel at the crawlerway along which the space shuttle is very slowly maneuvered between these two points. See a Saturn V rocket (the same one that went to the moon in 1969) and experience a simulated launch in a reconstructed control room. If you've ever hankered after your own little bit of "stardust" it is possible to touch a piece of the moon and a piece of Mars and at certain times of the day you can meet an astronaut and ask all of those questions that you've always wondered about.
The Atlantic Coast
Only an hour away from Orlando, it’s easy to visit the Atlantic Coast for a day. Cocoa Beach is a tourist resort where the young hang out complete with a pier, surf shops and surfing competitions. It's been called the quintessential beach and offers endless ways to enjoy recreation and leisure. Swimming here can be exciting in the Atlantic waves, and its something of a Mecca for surfers. A couple of miles south along the coast is Melbourne Beach which is a more peaceful Atlantic beach if that’s more your scene.
The beach at the Canaveral National Seashore is a magnificent 24 mile strip of sand backed by dunes. The beaches are fine for sunbathing, but swimming conditions can be hazardous and there are no lifeguards. If you feel like stretching your legs, follow the 5 mile Cruickshank Trail which starts near the Blackpoint Wildlife Drive in the Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge.
